What is a Microneedling Facial?

Microneedling is a widely popular and effective cosmetic procedure that involves creating very small wounds in the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause a natural wound response causing your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger.

These tiny needles are organized in groups of 12 or 36 pins and can be precisely adjusted to penetrate the skin at a range between 0.5-2.0mm depending on your skin concern. Before getting started, a topical anesthetic also known as numbing cream is applied to reduce the chances of any pain. This microneedling numbing cream is applied usually 40 minutes prior to performing the treatment to ensure it is fully absorbed into the skin.

During the procedure, our licensed esthetician makes small pricks under the skin with our professional microneedling device while also applying a topical serum, usually hyaluronic acid. These pricks create tiny wounds that breach the top layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum, to trigger a natural wound response. The needle punctures are so small that you will not be able to notice them after the procedure but you will still see incredible results. With each treatment, your skin restores up to a year's worth of lost collagen while also improving the overall appearance of your skin.

A custom-made serum is applied after the microneedling treatment to help with healing as well as a complimentary calming face mask and red LED light therapy.

Microneedling Benefits

The Microneedling Facial produces amazing results just simply after one treatment and continues to boost the appearance of your complexion for months afterward. The benefits of microneedling are incredible but we have summed up the most important ones below:

Aging is simply just a part of life, however, premature aging that presents itself as fine lines and wrinkles is something that can easily be avoided with microneedling. As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity, so it appears loose. Aging skin may also look dull and lack a youthful glow but with the help of microneedling you reverse the process of time.

Collagen and elastin are compounds in your skin that add structure and strength, over time these proteins in the skin become weak. The tiny injuries from a microneedling session boost collagen and elastin to fight lines and wrinkles by forcing the skin to rebuild itself.

As you trick the skin into being injured you also trick collagen and elastin the need to become stronger and make more proteins needed to rebuild the skin to become stronger and youthful. The buildup of collagen that occurs in response to the tiny wounds can improve the structure to fight sagging, plus, just 24 hours following a session, you experience a radiant glow.

Scarring of the skin occurs when collagen and elastin needed to rebuild the area are not fully supported or are too weak. Microneedling is super effective in addressing acne and other scars on your skin. Unfortunately, the only type of scars not possible to treat is keloid or raised scars.

During the skin-pricking process, your skin produces more collagen to heal the small wounds from the needles. The concept is that new collagen that's formed will help smooth out your skin's appearance helping to fill scars.

In addition to treating acne scars, microneedling is also very effective in reducing large pores on the face. Even though microneedling involves creating small holes in the skin it actually doesn't increase the size of the pores themselves. What is actually does is stimulate the collagen around the pores which makes the area around the pore become tighter and therefore reduces the size of the pore to appear almost invisible.

*Note that if you have active acne, microneedling is not the ideal procedure for you as you run into the risk of spreading the acne across other areas on the face. We recommend treating the acne with a regular facial first before choosing to get a microneedling facial to help get rid of acne scarring, discoloration, or enlarged pores.

Microneedling is very effective in reducing the appearance of sun damage, superficially, hyperpigmentation and age spots. If you have spent a lot of time out in the sun you probably have some sunspots that have popped out. Microneedling has the ability to stimulate new collagen and skin cells that can rejuvenate your look and even out your skin tone.

Because microneedling causes micro-punctures in the skin, post microneedling just happens to be the prime time to apply topical treatments, moisturizers, and other serums that boost your skin's health and appearance. The micro-holes receive creams, serums, and gels more easily and deliver them deeper into your dermis than when applied regularly, also known as micro-channeling.

Microneedling is not limited to just your face, it is also very effective to treat just about anywhere on your body. It can be effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks that show up after periods of growth, such as during pregnancy.

Is Microneedling Safe?

Microneedling is a safe and effective alternative to neuromodulation (such as Botox) and filler for treating fine lines and wrinkles utilizing your body's own processes.

Microneedling is considered safe. But like any procedure, you can run into some minor risks. Even though we go through an intensive consultation to understand your health and reactions to certain products there is still a slight risk of running into an allergic reaction to the cream or serum that goes on your skin after the mirconeedling treatment. More importantly, the wounds created might get infected if you don't keep your skin clean, therefore ensure you follow proper aftercare instructions from our skincare experts.

Make sure you stay away from places that could irritate your skin, like swimming pools, lakes, rivers, oceans, saunas, and jacuzzis. Ensure you also do not use any irritating soaps, lotions, or oils (specifically tea tree oil).

When will you see Microneedling Results?

You may be very surprised to discover that you can see initial results almost immediately after the microneedling treatment. As the skin is penetrated by the needles this immediately causes a natural wound response that forces your immune system to release signals to begin building the deeper layers of the skin. However, the most dramatic results will not be visible until four to six weeks after the treatment. Keep in mind that it takes roughly this long for your body to create new healthy collagen.

Our team will advise you that your expected results are also based on the concern you are trying to treat. For treating scars, you may need to wait between 6-8 months to achieve your desired results, while for tissue and skin rejuvenation you may see results in a little as two weeks.

Microneedling Downtime?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure so the recovery time is minimal compared to lasers or plastic surgery. Most people experience very little downtime or no downtime at all.

You may notice skin irritation and redness with the first 24-72 hours following the procedure. This is a natural response to the small micro-channels made by the needles in your skin.

You can go back to work and carry on with your daily activities after the procedure if you're comfortable and are welcome to apply makeup during the first few days as the redness starts to go away. Make sure to avoid hot showers and saunas/steam rooms for the first 2 days to avoid any side effects as the skin is still extremely sensitive.

Make sure you also apply sunscreen as your skin will become extremely sensitive for at least a week. After micorneedling, your skin works fairly quickly to rejuvenate new tissue. In theory, you should see results within a couple of weeks.

Microneedling Healing Stages?

The concept of microneedling is simple: create small injuries in the skin so that your immune system can produce a natural wound response to build up a stronger and healthier skin structure.

There are three phases in the wound healing process with microneedling:

1. Inflammation: Introducing microchannels into the skin using a professional microneedling device stimulates your immune system to increase blood flow which cleans up the deep layers of the skin and stimulates a natural wound response releasing growth factors and signaling proteins. This is the initial step in creating new tissue.

2. Proliferation: As the small wounds are being naturally repaired, granulation cells in your skin help with the growth of the extracellular matrix and new vascular structures. This is the structural base for new tissue growth and is vital when building up deep scar tissue specifically from acne.

3. Remodeling: The final step in the rejuvenation process of microneedling is the creation of new dermal tissue and vascular supply leading to skin revitalization. Microneedling stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin which helps to fill fine lines, improve acne scars, smooth out large pores, and brighten the skin. The final result is a fresher-looking skin complexion with smoother and more youthful results.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

We know the idea of having small tiny needles penetrating your skin might sound scary or that it might hurt, however, our team will ensure that you feel absolutely comfortable during the entire procedure.

To ensure that you do not feel a thing, our expert team will always apply a microneedling numbing cream onto the face approximately 30 minutes prior to the treatment. This microneedling numbing cream is designed specifically to be stronger than your typical OTC lidocaine cream you might find at your local pharmacy. This cream ensures your skin is fully numb and moisturized for the microneedling facial treatment.

Once the microneedling numbing cream is fully absorbed into the skin you will not feel anything and there is absolutely no pain after the treatment is fully completed.

How Often Should You Get Microneedling?

To maintain the results of your treatment, you'll need multiple sessions and perhaps other complimenting treatments such as a chemical peel or a microdermabrasion facial. Our expert team will advise you on the best plan of action based on your individual goals and skincare concern.

Each Micorneedling session takes about 90 minutes, depending on the size and location of the area being treated. Most people require three to six treatments for ideal results spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Treatments are generally scheduled two to six weeks apart. While superficial results are quicker, it may take many weeks to see the full results of treatment depending on your concern.
